New HSE Guides on First Aid at Work – What Employers Need to Know

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently published two important updates that all employers should be aware of when it comes to first aid provision in the workplace. These new guides are designed to ensure that businesses are meeting their responsibilities and providing the appropriate level of first aid training and care for their employees. As a training provider at Jill Webb Training, I believe it’s crucial to share these updates and explain how they may impact your workplace.

First Aid at Work: Guidance on Regulations

The first guide, “First Aid at Work: Guidance on Regulations,” has been updated to emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach to first aid in the workplace. This publication outlines what employers must do to ensure that their workplace is adequately prepared for first aid emergencies.

The most significant update in this guidance is the inclusion of mental health in the first aid needs assessment. HSE now encourages employers to take their workers’ mental health into account when planning first aid provision. This means that in addition to physical first aid measures, employers should also consider the potential for mental health crises, such as panic attacks, anxiety episodes, or other stress-related conditions that may require immediate assistance.

By addressing both physical and mental health in the first aid assessment, employers can ensure that their workplace is fully equipped to support the well-being of their employees, contributing to a safer and more supportive environment.

Selecting a First Aid Training Provider: A Guide for Employers

The second guide, “Selecting a First Aid Training Provider: A Guide for Employers,” has been updated to make it easier for businesses to identify the right provider to meet their first aid training needs.

This new edition simplifies the considerations that employers need to take into account when choosing a training provider. It highlights key factors like ensuring that the provider is competent, offers certified and up-to-date training, and delivers training that aligns with the specific risks and needs of the employer’s workplace.

The guide ensures that employers can confidently select a first aid training provider who will provide effective and relevant training, helping employees feel prepared and capable of dealing with first aid situations. Whether it’s for basic first aid, mental health first aid, or specialized workplace risks, this guide will help you make an informed choice.
